ST25 Rice: Why It Commands a Premium and What Importers Should Know

ST25 Vietnamese fragrant rice — World's Best Rice 2019 & 2023
When buyers ask us about ST25 rice, the question is almost always the same: is the price difference actually worth it?
The honest answer is yes, but only in the right market. ST25 is not the correct product for every buyer. Understanding what makes it special, who it is designed for, and what to verify before placing an order will help you make that call clearly.
What ST25 actually is

ST25 rice grains — soft texture and natural pandan aroma
ST25 is a long-grain fragrant rice variety developed in Soc Trang province, in Vietnam's Mekong Delta. It was created by agricultural scientist Ho Quang Cua and his team after years of selective breeding. In 2019 it was named the World's Best Rice at the World Rice Conference, and it repeated that recognition in 2023.
Three things set ST25 apart from other Vietnamese fragrant varieties. First, a natural pandan-like aroma that becomes more pronounced when the rice is cooked. Second, a soft and slightly sticky texture despite being a long-grain variety, which makes it unusually satisfying to eat. Third, a clean translucent appearance with a consistency that holds well after cooking and does not turn gluggy when it cools.
These qualities are difficult to replicate in other varieties. They are also directly visible and tasteable to end consumers, which is why retail buyers and specialty food distributors have been willing to pay significantly more for it.
Who buys ST25 and why

The strongest markets for ST25 are premium retail, specialty food distributors, and restaurant supply in Europe, Australia, and parts of Asia. Vietnamese diaspora communities in these markets were the early adopters, and mainstream consumers have followed.
In Europe, ST25 has found a meaningful presence in Italy, Denmark, Sweden, and France. In Australia, it has grown steadily as a premium alternative to Thai jasmine rice. In the Middle East, Vietnamese exporters are actively positioning ST25 to compete against Thai fragrant varieties in markets where quality and provenance matter as much as price.
For food service buyers specifically, ST25's texture is a practical advantage. It holds its shape and aroma across a service period better than many other fragrant varieties, which reduces waste and improves the consistency of what reaches the plate.

ST25 is not a commodity purchase. Buyers who have introduced it to their retail customers or restaurant clients consistently report that it generates repeat demand. The variety builds loyalty in a way that standard white rice simply cannot. |
What importers should verify before buying

ST25 quality verification — certificates and traceability
ST25 is widely recognised and therefore widely imitated. Lower-grade fragrant varieties are sometimes mislabelled as ST25, and blended rice is occasionally passed off as pure variety. For buyers sourcing ST25 for the first time or switching suppliers, these checks matter.
- Request a variety certificate or phytosanitary certificate that specifies ST25 by name, not just the grade.
- Ask for a sample from the actual production batch you will be buying from, not a pre-prepared display sample.
- Confirm that the supplier processes from paddy grown in verified ST25 cultivation areas in the Mekong Delta. Soc Trang and Kien Giang are the primary growing provinces.
- Agree the moisture content and broken grain specification in writing as part of the contract.
- For European buyers, confirm that the exporter can provide phytosanitary certificates and certificates of origin compliant with EU import requirements.
Is ST25 right for your market?
ST25 makes clear commercial sense for buyers targeting premium retail, specialty food distribution, high-end food service, or Vietnamese and broader Asian communities in Europe, Australia, or North America.
It is not the right product for volume buyers in price-sensitive markets. For those buyers, DT8 fragrant rice or OM5451 standard white rice will offer far better value. The worst outcome is paying a premium for ST25 and selling it into a market that does not recognise the difference. The best outcome is building a category around it that generates consistent repeat orders.
The simplest way to know which applies to your market is to request a sample, cook it alongside whatever fragrant variety you currently sell, and let the quality speak for itself.
